1.2.3 - Audio description or media alternative (prerecorded)

The intent of this success criterion is to provide people who are blind or visually impaired access to the visual information in a synchronized media presentation. One approach is to provide audio description of the video content. The second approach involves providing all of the information in the synchronized media (both visual and auditory) in text form.

Ways to meet the criterion

Provide people who are blind or visually impaired access to the visual information in a video. Add any relevant information about actions, characters, scene changes and on-screen text that is not spoken in the main sound track via:

  1. Audio description
Add audio descriptions such as additional information about actions, characters, scene changes and on screen text (that are important and not otherwise spoken) during existing pauses in the sound track.
  2. Text alternative
Text based media that provides a running description of all that is going on in the video. Since the text description is not constrained to the pauses in the audio track, it can provide full/detailed descriptions of all visual information i.e. visual context, actions and expressions of actors, non-speech sounds such as laughter. The descriptions follows the same sequence as the video file.
