Signage

Effective signage helps guide citizens and visitors to our parks, facilities and events. There are different types of signage which play specific roles in identifying City of Calgary buildings, outdoor spaces, projects, events, restrictions and instructions. Most signs can be broken down into three main categories. Directional (wayfinding), informational (operational) and promotional. All of these signs need to be consistently branded, easy to read and citizen focused. Please see below for a few examples of the many types we do within our organization.

Directional (wayfinding and identification)

Entrance and building signage

  • Focus on clarity and visibility from the audience point of view.
  • Purpose is to identify spaces or buildings and direct people.
  • Most often viewed at a distance walking or driving by.
  • The City of Calgary Identifier must always be placed in top left corner.
  • If space permits “calgary.ca | contact 311”.

Informational (operational)

Instructional

  • Focus on clarity and visibility from the audience point of view.
  • Purpose is to identify construction projects or public notice and direct people.
  • Content may also be educational in nature.
  • Viewed at a distance and in some instances close up.
  • The City of Calgary Identifier must always be placed in top left corner.
  • If space permits “calgary.ca | contact 311” to be included.

Partnerships

  • The City of Calgary Identifier must always be placed in top left corner.
  • Partner logos should be placed at the bottom of the sign on the lower right.
  • Partner logos must never be made bigger than The City of Calgary Identifier.
  • If there are multiple partner logos they must be same scale and spaced evenly.
  • Focus on clarity and visibility from the audience point of view.

Promotional

Events or campaigns

  • Focus on clarity and visibility from the audience point of view.
  • Purpose is to generate interest with a distinct call to action.
  • Most often viewed close up.
  • The City of Calgary Identifier must always be placed in top left corner.
  • Call to action and “calgary.ca | contact 311” must always be included.

Capital signage guidelines

These guidelines are specifically for signs used as the Primary Identifier signs for Capital projects at construction sites. Through these signs, it makes it easier for Calgarians to identify where and how The City of Calgary infrastructure investments are being made, and how they benefit the community.
